This adventure goes down as one of my top ten favorite days in Jacksonville! My husband and I have birthdays that are four days a part from each other. We decided to plan a super fun 30th birthday weekend. We had friends fly in from our previous duty station in San Diego and Atlanta. For Saturday during the day, we planned a kayaking trip with First Coast Outfitters and took their “Ft. George River Lost Paradise Tour.” We met up at the Ribault Club, which is just off Hecksher Drive, a little north of the city. The tour guide gave us a quick instruction and then we were off on our Jacksonville adventure.
The Ft. George River has one of the most diverse eco systems in the area. We paddled through the Timucuan Preserve estuary with thousands of acres of tributaries that wind through the marsh. We saw wading birds and fishing osprey.
The tour took us from the river, to the intercoastal, along beautiful white sand bars and salt marsh creeks. We were able to bring our cameras with us ( plastic baggies to keep them safe) and took tons of photos of wildlife and our friends paddling.
Our particular tour was a 3 hour guided historical and ecological tour. You can set up your own group, or join one of their many weekend tours. They have family tours and offer group discounts. This would be a great spouse event or FRG event during deployment too. Other kayaking tour areas include: Downtown Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Guana River, Guana Six Mile, Kingsley Plantation and more Many tours are available within 20 minutes of Jacksonville.
What to bring: Water, Snacks, Shoes or foot protection that can get wet, Sunscreen, Hat, Bug Spray and Bathing Suit
Provided: All kayaking gear includes: life jacket, comfortable Kayak, light weight paddle
We had a blast. This was by far one of my favorite Jacksonville adventures. If there’s one thing you add to your Jacksonville Bucket List, make it a day out on the kayaks!
